Purpose & Target Audience
The purpose of the smart calendar app is to specifically help nurses navigate their tasks and daily responsibilities more easily and conveniently.
- Promoting efficiency
- Reducing mental strain
- Supporting overall well-being
By streamlining shift schedules, patient care tasks, and documentation, the app serves as an intuitive companion that not only organizes workflows but also encourages balance, reflection, and resilience in the demanding environment of healthcare.
This smart calendar is designed for nurses in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities who have irregular schedules, heavy workloads, and ongoing professional responsibilities. Certain tasks include tracking rotating shifts (day/night/weekend), meetings, wellness check-ins, as well as notifications and reminders for important appointments and alerts.
Irregular Shifts
- Nurses need color coding and clear visibility of their work
Task Overload
- Nurses balance patient assignments, care tasks, charting, and training sessions
- Without organization, this leads to missed details or added stress
Wellness Neglect
- Nurses often sacrifice rest, meals, and personal time due to workload
- Reassurance of the work that they do
Collaboration Needs
- Nurses rely heavily on team communication. Scheduling handoffs and meetings within the calendar prevents overlap and miscommunication
Ease of Use
- Tools must be mobile-friendly, fast, and distraction-free, since nurses often check schedules during short breaks or while on the go
5 Main Features
Task Organizer
- Manage tasks handled on a daily-basis
Reminders
- Notify and alert users about certain tasks that should be prioritized
Mood Check-in
- Improving performance, well-being, and patient care
Progress Dashboard
- Track users accomplishments and well-being
Chat Board
- Users can chat with other users, exchange information, and check-in with each other through chat rooms
User Feedback
After developing 5 main features for the application, users were tasked with providing feedback to help clarify and further develop the app.
Feedback/Questions
- How can the app allow nurses to keep a good mentality, mental health?
- How can the app keep the nurses day fun
- Notifications from hospitals for active persons/threat
- Alerts for unexpected situations
- How to motivate users to want to use the app for tracking
- Alerts for doctor’s appointments
- Alerts for lab days-what kind of labs need to be drawn that day
- Schedule for team meetings
- Alarms for lunch break-nurses are busy and lost track of time
- A place to put what day different doctors come-we have a physician that comes on a certain day, a podiatrist, a dentist, the psychiatrist, etc.
- Order medications from the pharmacy/ restocking
Low- to Mid- Fidelity
Lo-fi creations involved creating two options and finding a way to create the best user experience through lo-fi ideations. Mid-fi wireframes involved defining the application in more detail to clearly highlight the tasks of the applications and having a better understanding of how to navigate through the app.
Usability testing
Test Task Flows
- Add a task to the Calendar
- Add moods to your mood tracker
- Chat with one of the nurses
- Add a reminder to your Calendar
- Update progress dashboard
Users were tasked with following a set of broad instructions to test the flow of the application. This testing is meant to understand how clear and easy it is to navigate through the app.
User Feedback
Users will provide feedback to help refine the app to operate effectively.
User 1
- Making the “add” button bigger for better visibility
- Adding an “alert” or security button in the chat board for nurses, in cases of emergencies
User 2
- Replacing the home icon with a Calander icon
- Having a progress section or icon on the Calander page at the top; makes users feel good about the work that they do
- Change the mood icon in the nav bar to show a clearer mood/emotion (better icon clarity)
- Create better consistency with shapes and boxes throughout all pages; more rounder shapes
- Having sign-up/ log-in screens to allow users to customize the colors of their screens (based on the color of the nurse’s scrubs or institution colors
User 3
- Replacing the home icon with a Calander icon
- Make the “add” button bigger
- Move the home/Calander icon to the middle of the nav bar to highlight it as the main page
- Add a drop-down button for keyboard
- Bell icon for reminders will confuse users if the reminder task flow is part of the main Calander page
